According to archaeological finds, 7,000 years ago stone age people would temporarily settle in the Nivankylä area. The first houses built in this area were a part of Rovaniemi, which in 1543 had a total of 15 houses. One of them was Nikkila, and another possibly Niva's house. At that time, the houses belonged to the village Ounasjoki. Nivankylä once held family history of the houses. Some of the original families that lived there were Hiukka, Luusuanniemi, Heliste, Kovala and Tuiskunmäki.
